Accessible Restroom Placement Guidelines: Best Practices

Having ADA portable toilets isn't enough—they must be properly placed to be truly accessible. Poor placement can make a compliant unit inaccessible, defeating the purpose and potentially creating liability. Here's how to position accessible facilities correctly.

Placement Principles

Prime Location Priority

ADA units deserve the best spots, not leftovers:

  • Never: Back corners, behind other units, distant locations
  • Always: Convenient, visible, integrated with other facilities
  • Goal: Equivalent or better access than standard units

Distribution Strategy

  • Distribute ADA units across event footprint
  • Place near major activity centers
  • Position along accessible routes already in use
  • Consider proximity to accessible parking

Surface Requirements

ADA Surface Standards

Surfaces must be:

  • Firm: Does not compress significantly under weight
  • Stable: Does not shift or become unstable
  • Slip-resistant: Provides traction when wet

Acceptable Surfaces

  • Concrete or asphalt
  • Compacted crushed stone/gravel
  • Interlocking accessible event mats
  • Plywood platforms (properly secured)
  • Brick pavers (with minimal gaps)

Unacceptable Surfaces

  • Loose grass (wheelchairs sink)
  • Loose gravel or sand
  • Mulch or wood chips
  • Mud or soft soil
  • Deep carpet without firm backing

Creating Accessible Surfaces

When ideal surfaces aren't available:

  • Portable mats: Interlocking accessible event matting
  • Gravel pad: Compacted crushed stone 4-6 inches deep
  • Plywood platform: ¾-inch plywood, properly supported
  • Temporary pavement: Roll-out accessible surfaces

Accessible Route Requirements

Pathway Specifications

  • Width: Minimum 36 inches clear (44 inches preferred)
  • Running slope: Maximum 5% (1:20)
  • Cross slope: Maximum 2% (1:48)
  • Level changes: No abrupt changes over ½ inch
  • Gaps: No gaps wider than ½ inch

Pathway Surface

  • Same firm, stable, slip-resistant requirements as placement
  • Must extend entire route from accessible areas to units
  • Consider pathway surface in wet weather

Ramps

If level changes are unavoidable:

  • Maximum slope: 8.33% (1:12)
  • Maximum rise per run: 30 inches
  • Handrails required if rise exceeds 6 inches
  • Level landings at top and bottom

Landing and Maneuvering Space

At Unit Entrance

  • Level landing: 60 × 60 inches minimum
  • Maximum slope: 2% (1:48) in any direction
  • Clear of obstacles: No planters, signs, or barriers
  • Firm surface: Same as pathway requirements

Door Swing Clearance

  • ADA units typically have outswing doors
  • Ensure door swing area is clear
  • No obstacles in door swing path

Signage and Wayfinding

Unit Identification

  • International Symbol of Accessibility on unit
  • Symbol clearly visible from approach direction
  • Consider elevated signage for visibility over crowds

Directional Signage

  • Signs at key decision points
  • Consistent design with event signage
  • Mounted at wheelchair-accessible height
  • High contrast for visibility

Common Placement Mistakes

Mistakes to Avoid

  • Grass placement: Without accessible surface underneath
  • Back corner position: Farthest from event activities
  • Behind standard units: Blocked access to ADA units
  • Uphill placement: Requiring wheelchair users to navigate slopes
  • Crowded positioning: Insufficient maneuvering space
  • No pathway: No accessible route to the unit

Correcting Mistakes

  • Relocate units to better positions if possible
  • Add portable matting to create accessible surfaces
  • Clear obstacles from pathways and landings
  • Add ramps if level changes are unavoidable

Weather Considerations

Rain Preparation

  • Ensure surfaces remain accessible when wet
  • Consider covered pathways for extended events
  • Have additional matting available
  • Monitor pathway conditions throughout event

Sun and Heat

  • Consider shade for ADA units if possible
  • Wheelchair users may have temperature sensitivity
  • Units in direct sun become uncomfortably hot

Multi-Day Event Considerations

Daily Inspection

  • Check pathway surfaces for damage or degradation
  • Verify landing areas remain level and clear
  • Confirm signage still visible and correct
  • Address any developing accessibility barriers

Maintenance Planning

  • Coordinate service to maintain accessible routes
  • Plan for pathway repair if needed
  • Have spare matting available

Frequently Asked Questions

ADA requires firm, stable, slip-resistant surfaces for accessible routes and unit placement. Acceptable surfaces include concrete, asphalt, packed gravel, or interlocking portable mats. Grass alone typically does not meet requirements as wheelchairs can sink.

While ADA does not specify maximum distance, accessible facilities should be no farther than other restrooms. Best practice places ADA units in prime, convenient locations—not back corners. Long distances with no rest areas create barriers.

Placement directly on grass often fails accessibility requirements because wheelchairs can sink or become stuck. Use portable accessible mats, plywood platforms, or gravel pads to create an accessible surface for the unit and approach path.
